Donkeys are desert animals and thus our wet, temperate climate and lush pastures present a somewhat alien environment to them. This single fact determines the basis of their care and particularly feeding, and how it differs significantly from horses and ponies. They need plenty of hay, even if you have good pasture for them to browse and nibble. Never feed alfalfa hay, as it is much too rich and high in protein. A grass hay is a much better alternative. Minerals in block or tub form should also be available. An occasional animal cracker, ginger snap, graham cracker, or other low-fat type snack is okay. Carrot slices are a favorite; they are nutritional as well as low in calories. Donkeys gain weight easily and develop a "fat neck roll" or "broken crest" if fed a rich, high-protein diet. This unappealing neck roll is almost impossible to get rid of once it has built up.
Donkeys are NOT WATERPROOF, therefore they require protection from the weather—wind, rain, hot and cold. Donkeys need a shelter with a minimum of two sides and a roof, and access to clean, fresh water at all times.
Our farrier visits our donkeys about once a month, but every three months generally is sufficient depending on the hoof growth of your donkey herd.
We vaccinate and worm our donkeys here at Moonstone as we do for our other equines. If you are interested in our worming and vaccination schedules, email us and we will forward you the donkey schedule for the farm. We worm monthly and follow a rigid vaccination schedule.
